Happened to me as well on windows 10, try using windowed mode for one tab as mentioned above. Or try to update directx if it fixes that. Another thing that happened to me as since one of my computer's graphic card could not handle two wow windows it didn't allowed me to alt tab so I lowered resolution on video settings in game and it kinda helped. Also unusual as it may sound, I increased the resolution by first increasing resolution of my computer and it allowed me to open 2-3 windows and use alt-tab, kinda weird

The thing with pvp is that when you are in world whether you are farming, leveling, doing quest or just hanging around, you should always expect an attack. You can un-flag yourself from pvp whenever you are in a main city or any friendly territory that is your name will appear in blue font when you don't want yourself to be vulnerable to opposite faction. Beware that as soon as you enter into any contested or enemy territory even when you are on a flight path you will be flagged for pvp that is your name will appear in green font.

Word of advice you can't simply complain about pvp being mandatory on a pvp server as an excuse from not pvping or being ganked. Being a pvp and pve server we have some events such as scourage invasion or world pvp (If we are going to have any?) you will be killed even inside your friendly territory without being flagged/un-flagged so you can't complain about it either. Also flaming never result in anything good.

An advice for you friend you should work on some attunements, pre-raid gear and stocking consumables then apply in a guild saying that you are working on the requirements the guilds ask before joining them. As long as you are willing to do some stuff no matter which faction you are playing or which guild you want to apply, everyone on the server will be glad and try to help.
